Intensive English

The university's English (ESL) Program is designed to help you improve your language proficiency before you begin your studies with UMass Boston Navitas GSSP. This full-time course is provided by UMass Boston for students who do not have the required English proficiency test scores to enter directly into the Undergraduate or Graduate International Student Success Program. This integrated program focuses on instruction in university study skills, academic writing, and content-based course work typical of a United States university classroom.

Course work includes intensive practice in the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The learning process is enhanced through assigned readings and exercises, as well as oral presentation and writing projects. Computer lab time is scheduled and you will receive basic instruction in research and creating presentations for academic purposes. Classes take place Monday through Friday between 8.00am and 4.00pm, for a total of 20-24 hours per week. After completion of your Intensive English program with UMass Boston, you will not be required to take the IELTS/TOEFL tests. Students progress into UMass Boston Navitas GSSP based on the portfolio review and the recommendation by the ESL Department. UMass Boston Navitas GSSP students will receive a 5-year I-20 to cover the entire duration of English + degree studies. There is no transfer or re-application process in going from the ESL program to the Undergraduate or Graduate UMass Boston Navitas GSSP.
