English for Academic Purpose (EAP)

This program provides students with the English language proficiency needed to continue their academic education at the diploma, degree and post-graduate levels. It is also ideal for those who need excellent communication skills for specific career goals.

At Humber, we make learning English both practical and interesting. As well as teaching you the rules of grammar, we show you how and why you will use them. Then we practice - in class, in the computer labs, with native speakers and at social events. This makes learning dynamic and enjoyable.

The EAP program is offered at eight levels of study from high beginner to advanced. The core curriculum of 18 hours per week is complemented by an additional 4 hours in a computerized language-learning lab for a total of 22 hours of classroom instruction per week. Level 8 of the program includes a general education course which is recognized as a credit course towards many of Humber’s diploma programs.

Completion of EAP Level 8 meets the language proficiency requirements for admission to most Humber programs. For students completing Level 8 with no failed courses and with the appropriate grades (see below), no further IELTS or TOEFL testing is required.

EAP Pathways:
ㆍLevel 8 completion with 60% → Humber diploma programs
ㆍLevel 8 completion with 75% → Humber degree programs
ㆍLevel 8 completion with 80% → Humber postgraduate programs

International students enrolled in EAP may receive conditional offers of admission to most Humber programs (Meeting the minimum language proficiency requirement does not guarantee admission to the program).

Summer Language Program (SLP) / Explore

The Summer Language program is a complete immersion experience in the English language with a focus on communication skills. As a student in SLP, you will take classes, electives, and workshops, visit Toronto landmarks and cultural events, and have fun with your classmates. We promise that by the end of five weeks, your language skills, especially your speaking and listening, will have improved significantly.

Once you arrive, you will be assigned a room in our on-campus residence (just steps away from your classes) where full-time monitors will live with you and provide you with an entire range of after-class activities. On the first day, your English skills will be assessed and you will be placed in a class that suits your language level. Following that, you will receive an orientation to the College and the city of Toronto.

You have a choice of two sessions: Spring (May/June) or Summer (July /August). Our goal is to help you become more comfortable speaking and understanding English. The SLP is a great way to improve your English and meet other students from around the world.

The Humber Postgraduate TESL Program is accredited by TESL Canada (Standard II) and TESL Ontario.

Our students learn from the best in the TESL field. Faculty are extremely experienced in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction.

The TESL/TEFL program focuses on six core areas:

In the Practicum, students practise their teaching skills in a variety of programs, such as community and school board ESL courses and academic and occupation-specific programs. Students may also work in our language labs and writing centre and as speaking tutors with our EAP students.

i-TESOL

i-TESOL is an intensive certificate program for interational students seeking Canadian teaching credentials. It consists of 4 courses plus an optional Practicum component and provides a certificate in the field of teaching English as a second / foreign language to adults. The certificate can be earned in just 4 weeks. The program can be customized for groups of both novice and experienced EFL / ESOL teachers and is aimed at the EFL context. i-TESOL particpants observe and have the opportuntity to do supervised practice teaching in adult ESOL classes, including ESL, immersion ESL and EAP. Qualified graduates of the i-TESOL program may apply for TESL Canada certification at Standard I. Graduates of this program are not eligible for TESL Ontario certification.
