Phillips Academy, Andover

1778년에 설립돼, 미국 내에서 가장 오래된 보딩스쿨로 유명한 이 학교는 전체 사립학교 중 1등으로 쳐주는 학교로 한국에도 널리 알려져 있다. 아직까지도 필립스 아카데미(보통 앤도버라고 불림)는 '전국 방방곡곡에서 몰려든' 젊은이들의 교육에 헌신하고 있으며 현재 46개주 출신과 31개국 출신으로 구성된 1,200여명의 학생이 재학 중이다.

500에이커 가량의 방대한 캠퍼스는 매사추세츠주의 앤도버 지역, 언덕 위에 자리하고 있으며 보스턴에서 북쪽으로 30분, 뉴잉글랜드의 아름다운 해변과 산까지는 1시간 거리에 위치해 있다. 캠퍼스 내에 125에이커 가량의 조류 보호지역이 있고 두 개의 박물관 Addison Gallery of American Art와 Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology이 있다. 학급당 학생수는 13명이다. 학생과 교사비는 7:1 정도이다. 우수한 학생의 경우 프랑스와 스페인으로의 교환학생 프로그램 참가도 가능하다.

동문들이 워낙 화려해서 기부금만 4억 달러에 이르고 있으며, 최고의 우수한 생활환경, 시설을 자랑한다. 특히 이 학교의 기숙사 부페는 메뉴가 30여가지가 넘는 화려함(?)으로 유명하다.

Phillips Academy, better known as Andover, is a coeducational boarding high school known for academic excellence and community diversity. Students hail from 45 states and 29 countries; 39 percent receive support from a $10.2 million financial aid budget. A $491 million endowment (as of 6/30/03) supports small classes and unparalleled breadth and depth in academics, wide-ranging opportunities in athletics, performing arts, community service and extracurricular activities. Resources include state-of-the-art technology, two museums, and art and language-learning centers. The academy was founded in 1778.

미국 매사추세츠 주 북동부 미들섹스 군에 있는 시. 보스턴 정북쪽, 미스틱 강변에 있습니다. 1630년 매사추세츠의 초대 총독 매슈 크래덕이 이곳에 농장을 지으면서 세워졌습니다. 이곳의 이름은 '중간 여울'이라는 뜻이며 초기에는 농업과 어업이 주된 생업이었습니다. 조선업은 1631년 미국 최초의 원양선의 하나인 블레싱오브더베이호가 건조되면서 시작되었습니다.
그후 서인도제도산(産) 설탕으로 만든 럼주를 아프리카 노예들과 바꾸고 노예들을 다시 서인도 제도에 파는 '삼각 무역'으로 활기를 띠었습니다. 지금은 주로 주거지역이며 경공업이 조금 발달해 있습니다. 1852년 터프츠대학교가 설립되었습니다. 시대별 유물을 소장하고 있는 로열 하우스를 비롯한 식민지시대의 건축물이 여러 개 보존되어 있습니다. 1684년에 읍이 되었고 1892년 시가 되었습니다. 인구 57,407(1990).
