In this first of three programs as Old First Concerts’ 2014 Artists-in-Residence, acclaimed duo martha & monica performs music for ‘cello and piano from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. John Zarobell (former assistant curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and current Program Chair of European Studies at the University of San Francisco) joins the duo to discuss the music through the lens of art, literature, and politics. At the beginning of each new century, are we glancing back or looking forward? What influences composers from century to century?
