This week of empowerment encourages Oaklanders to pledge to be vegetarian for the week of April 21-27, 2014. Oakland Veg Week will be hosting events throughout the city the educate residents on the benefits of a plant-based diet and give them the tools to make healthier choices.

The weeks events includes speaking engagements by celebrated Oakland chef, food justice activist, and author Bryant Terry, whose  highly anticipated book, Afro-Vegan, goes on sale April 8. Terry will be signing books at Whole Foods Market Oakland on Tuesday, April 22. Also featured during Veg Week are speaking engagements by Oakland author and educator Colleen Patrick-Goudreau; cooking classes at Whole Foods Market Oakland; and a party for participants at the Lake Merritt Sailboat House. Restaurants throughout Oakland are getting involved by offering specials on vegetarian fare throughout the week.**Full schedule : oaklandveg.com/eventsveg… **

It is supported by Mayor Jean Quan and Oakland city councilmembers Lynette Gibson McElhaney, Desley Brooks, Rebecca Kaplan, and Libby Schaaf, Alameda County Supervisors Keith Carson and Wilma Chan, State Senator Loni Hancock and Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who are all pledging to eat meat-free for the week.
